A day in the centre, on foot

From the square to the fortress

Six stops, all walkable. Take a taxi or bus to Macedonia Square and start at Mother Teresa's house, a few minutes away.

From NEBO: [how you get to the centre: taxi time, bus number]

  1. Mother Teresa Memorial House

Opened in 2009 on the site of the church where Mother Teresa, born in Skopje in 1910, was baptised. Inside: letters, her Nobel Prize and a small chapel.

    Free entry
  2. Macedonia Square

The country's largest square, about 18,500 m², where independence was declared. The 12-metre Warrior on Horseback stands on a fountain pedestal in the middle.

  3. Stone Bridge

About 220 metres and 13 arches across the Vardar, built in the 15th century. Cross it and you're walking into the old town.

  4. Old BazaarStara Čaršija

Ottoman streets from the 15th–17th centuries, running from the Stone Bridge to Bit-Pazar, with around 30 mosques. Stop at the 15th-century inns: Kapan An, whose courtyard has tea rooms and restaurants, and Suli An, now the Old Bazaar Museum.

    Protected cultural heritage
  5. Skopje FortressKale

First built in the 6th century, on the highest point in the city above the Vardar. Walk the walls for the view back over the bazaar.

  6. Museum of Contemporary ArtMoCA

Founded after the 1963 earthquake, in a building given by Poland, just by the fortress. The collection includes Picasso, Calder, Léger, Vasarely and Christo.
